The storms and Floods that hit parts of Germany yesterday had massive consequences in some federal states. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the Sauerland was hit the hardest, in Lower Saxony roads had to be closed.
Thunderstorms moved very slowly over western and northern Germany on Monday. There was also heavy rain in Saarland. Some streets were flooded and basements were full. According to the police and fire department, there were no injuries.
NRW: fire brigades in continuous operation:
In North Rhine-Westphalia, according to the fire department, the city of Menden in the Sauerland was hit particularly hard. There have been around 200 operations in this area, said a spokesman for the Märkisches Kreis fire brigade control center in the evening. According to the district administration, the district of Olpe was also mainly about overcrowded streets and full basements.
In the town of Lage in the district of Lippe, up to 80 liters of water per square meter came down. Many basements were full. Streams burst their banks, mudslides rolled across the fields, reports the WDR.
Lower Saxony: closed roads due to mudslide:
In Saarland, too, the fire brigade and technical relief organization had to move out due to heavy rain. In St. Ingbert, streets were flooded in several areas and manhole covers were pushed out, the local police said. “There were significant traffic delays and traffic jams,” said a spokesman. Some houses have water in the basement.
There were heavy thunderstorms and rainfall in some regions in Thuringia. In Kranichfeld, the fire brigade had to move out and clear the flooded streets of mud. A federal highway was also affected.
In northern Germany, heavy rains on Monday caused streets and basements to be under water. In the Holzminden district of Lower Saxony, a mudslide buried parts of a federal road. Several streets had to be closed to traffic.
Meanwhile highest warning level by the weather service:
Deep “David” caused the unstable weather after the summer weekend. In the meantime, there have been official severe weather warnings from the German Weather Service (DWD) of the highest warning level violet for parts of the Sauerland and Siegerland, parts of Westphalia and for the Olpe district and parts of Ostwestfalen-Lippe. There were also severe weather warnings for the whole of South Westphalia.
The DWD had also published several severe weather warnings for northern Germany. Stormy gusts have been announced for today on the coasts, thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to subside in the morning.
