ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) has ruled that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party must hold fresh intra-party elections within 20 days or risk losing its electoral symbol, the bat. The ECP made this decision after finding that the PTI’s previous intra-party elections, held in June 2022, were not conducted in a transparent, fair, and just manner.
This decision comes at a crucial time, as Pakistan is just two months away from general elections. The PTI has criticized the ECP’s ruling, claiming that it is an attempt to prevent Imran Khan and his party from participating in the polls. However, the ECP has maintained that its decision is based on the law and is in the best interests of democracy.
The ECP’s four-member bench, in a 12-page order, stated that “We are convinced that the respondent party [PTI] failed to hold transparent, fair, and just intra-party elections in accordance with its prevailing Constitution 2019.”
The ECP further stated that the PTI’s elections held on June 10, 2022, were “highly objectionable/disputed” and could not be accepted under any circumstances. The ECP has given the PTI 20 days to hold fresh intra-party elections in accordance with its party constitution. If the PTI fails to do so, it will lose its electoral symbol, the bat.
