Pakistan Political Crisis- A Timeline

Pakistan’s Political Crisis is not simply a political one, it’s multi-pronged and attached to constitutional, Economic, and most of all Educational crises. The root of the ongoing political, social, and economic problems in Pakistan is the infighting of the Supreme Court judges and the weakness of the courts.

How? Here is a bird’s eye view!

Some Key Facts to know:

The Provincial Elections (Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) barred at any cost:

According to the constitution of Pakistan, the elections of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the Assemblies i.e. by April 14 in any case. All this was made sure to happen as this could halt the autocratic marshal Powers from taking over, as they have occupied Pakistan today.

• According to the constitution, the provincial governors should have given the date of the election but they did not When the case went to Lahore and Peshawar High Courts, the judges wasted 40 days out of 90 by giving long dates in the cases and implementation of the constitution stopped.

• On February 10, the Lahore High Court gave a decision, but the Election Commission refused to accept it, and on February 14, a contempt of court petition was filed, but it also remained slow.

• On February 20, the President of Pakistan gave a date to hold elections in Punjab and KP within 90 days, i.e. on April 9, which the caretaker governments and the Election Commission refused to accept.

• On February 23, the Supreme Court took notice of the petitions of the Speakers of Punjab and KP and started hearing the case, then the judges started arguing among themselves that “a full court should hear the case instead of 9 judges”.

No Contempt of court for the pro-PDM mafia ever issued:

• The government objected against two judges, so all the judges asked to form a new bench, The Chief Justice removed 4 judges and formed a new bench of 5 judges. This was such a mockery of the Courts in Pakistan! the funnier to this was, that the Chief Justice never, issued any Contempt of court to the pro-PDM mafia, till his last day of Retirement, be it in the Law Ministry under the cunning leadership of Azam Tarrar or Election Commission on the behest of Sikandar Sultan Raja or other PDM Political Parties, especially Maryam Aurangzeb, and Maryam Nawaz group who bashed the sitting chiefs and threatened of their houses set to fire.

Even the Noon League, under the leadership of Maryam Nawaz and the PPP along with the JUI-F goons stormed the Supreme Court the very moment an important hearing was undergoing in the Apex Court by the same judges.

5-judge bench declared the petition inadmissible

• On March 1st, the 2 of the remaining 5-judge bench declared the petition inadmissible on the ground that the Supreme Court should not decide the petitions pending in the High Courts for 46 days.

• Although only 44 days were left till then.

• The remaining 3 judges asked the President to give the date of Punjab and asked the Governor to give the date of KP.

President gave a new date

• On March 1, the President gave a new date of April 30 for Punjab.

• But on March 22, the Election Commission changed the date of the election to October 8 based on various excuses.

• On March 23, Governor KP also gave the date of October 8.

• Again these dates were challenged in the Supreme Court.

• On April 4, the Supreme Court declared the Election Commission’s decision unconstitutional and exceeded its powers and set the date for elections on May 14. The Election Commission did not follow this decision and filed a review petition.

Imran Khan announced rallies

• On May 7, Imran Khan announced rallies from May 10-14.

• On May 9, Imran Khan was abducted from the Islamabad High Court and released on May 12.

Peaceful protesters were brutally beaten by the Police

On May 14, peaceful protesters standing in solidarity with the Supreme Court across the country were brutally beaten and thousands of people were sent to jails.

On May 15, when the Supreme Court filed a case regarding the election, PDM held a rally in front of the Supreme Court, gave speeches, and threatened them. As mentioned above, it was all done on the behest of Noon League and JUI-F with the partnership of PPP-P.

The Chief Justice adjourned the case after this incident indefinitely and gave a verdict on August 31 after two and a half months.

• Since then, the constitution, law, and courts in Pakistan have completely lost their dignity and have become a joke. If the judges had heard and decided the cases according to the constitution and the law and given decisions instead of fighting among themselves, then the market of cruelty and brutality would not have heated up in the country.
