SCO Summit: Opposition Claims Government Restricting Khan’s Access to Basic Needs

As Pakistan prepares to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on October 15th and 16th, tensions are rising between the government and the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The PTI, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan who is currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail, alleges the government is deliberately restricting Khan’s access to basic needs to create chaos and disrupt the summit.
The PTI claims that recent security measures implemented at Adiala Jail, including a temporary ban on meetings with lawyers and family members, unfairly target Khan. They argue this is a violation of his fundamental rights and could harm his health and ability to prepare for upcoming legal proceedings.
“The government is stooping to new lows by using these tactics against a political opponent,” said PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry in a press conference. “These restrictions are politically motivated and aimed solely at creating chaos to undermine the SCO summit.”
The government, however, maintains that the security measures are necessary to ensure a safe and secure environment during the high-profile summit. They deny any political motives behind the restrictions and emphasize that Khan will continue to receive basic necessities.
“The security measures are temporary and implemented solely for the duration of the summit,” said Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb. “Mr. Khan will continue to be treated with dignity and will not be deprived of his basic rights.”
Independent observers have called for a swift resolution to the situation.
“It’s crucial that both sides act responsibly and ensure Mr. Khan’s rights are respected while maintaining security for the upcoming summit,” said Human Rights Watch researcher Ayesha Siddiqa.
As the Govt propagates and blames PTI for arranging these protests to disrupt the SCO Summit, it fails to see the plight of the people they have dragged to.
