Many Dead in Syria in Attack on Military Academy

Numerous people were killed and many more injured in an attack on a military academy in Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports at least 78 dead. The Syrian military blamed insurgents.

A drone attack on a graduation ceremony for military officers in the Syrian city of Homs killed scores of people and injured many more. Syrian state television reported this without giving exact figures. The Syrian military said drones loaded with explosives appeared toward the end of the ceremony. The armed forces blamed insurgents who carried out the attack with the support of “international forces.”

According to the TV report, the fatalities included civilians and military personnel. Some of the injured, including women and children, were in critical condition, according to the military. Nobody claimed responsibility for the crime. The Syrian military announced it would take decisive action against terrorist organizations.

The Syrian government had no immediate comment on the attack. The pro-government newspaper Al-Watan reported that the Syrian government had attacked fighters from the extremist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in the area, who had attacked government troops’ positions in the south of Idlib province.

The “White Helmets” active in the rebel area reported that government attacks had increased in recent days. Among other things, a school and a mosque were shot at in the city of Sarmin on Tuesday. At least six people were killed.
