Russian soldiers killed after attack on Nagorno-Karabakh

Several Russian soldiers killed after attack on Nagorno-Karabakh– A day after Azerbaijan’s attack on Nagorno-Karabakh, Moscow reports the deaths of several Russian soldiers in the region. Meanwhile, the offensive has effectively forced the separatists to give up.

According to Moscow, several Russian soldiers stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh were killed. The Russian Defense Ministry said the incident occurred near the town of Janjatag.

They were returning from an observation post when their vehicle was shot at with small arms fire. How many soldiers were said to have been killed was not reported. There were initially no independent confirmations. After the 2020 war, Russia had sent soldiers as peacekeepers to Nagorno-Karabakh.

Separatists forced to give up:

Azerbaijan and the Armenian separatists had previously announced a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh. The leadership in Baku wants to use the offensive to gain control of the area, which is predominantly inhabited by ethnic Armenians.

Azerbaijan said it had halted its military action after representatives of Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh said they were laying down arms. It remained unclear whether fighting might continue in some areas.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry:

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said the agreement included the withdrawal of Armenian military units and equipment from Nagorno-Karabakh and the disarmament of local defense forces. Armenia claims to have no regular ones stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh.

One day after the start of a large-scale military operation, Azerbaijan has now effectively forced the separatists to give up. The Nagorno-Karabakh authorities also said they had accepted negotiations on integration with Azerbaijan.

32 Armenians killed in Nagorno-Karabakh:

According to Armenian information, 32 people were killed in the fighting. After the fighting temporarily ended, the EU and the federal government called on Azerbaijan to ensure the safety of the people on site. Azerbaijan and Russia, which is traditionally an ally of Armenia, must “ensure that people are safe in their own homes,” said Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on the sidelines of a UN Security Council meeting in New York.

EU Council President Charles Michel said in a phone call that he had called on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to ensure “a complete ceasefire” and “safe and dignified treatment of the Armenians in Karabakh.” In addition, humanitarian aid must reach Nagorno-Karabakh “immediately.”
